IIRC the super caps technology is an off shoot of both the flash caps and the SMD devices. They have achieved very high microfarad ratings by acid etching the plates to give much greater surface area and thus more microfarads.

While great for memory back up and such , I still like the traditional caps, they seem to have less of an etchy top end and are smoother overall. The penalty is that their sizes are significantlly larger, and simply because of that I notice the offerings are diminishing rapidly. (Buy your 600 v 20 uF caps now !)
