Fuses: Better late than never

My senior year of college was 1992-93. Back then, people my age did not know the existence of audio electronics any better than the mass market stuff. I happened to cobble together a system comprising the Sony CDP-520ESII; Adcom GTP-400 and GFA-535; Pinnacle PN-5+; AQ Lapis, Topaz, and F-14. If you go to my homepage, you'll find that I relatively frequently refer back to this system.

Anyway, I've found it interesting that it's the non-audiophiles, because they aren't biased, who are often more open-minded than audiophiles. My housemates, friends, and neighbors all heard the differences wrought by using Simms Navcom Silencers, Roomtune JustaRack, and the AQ cables. As you may have noticed, we still have audiophiles who don't "believe" in such things.

In the early-90s, we did not know about after-market fuses. If, however, these fuses had been available then, those same housemates, friends, and neighbors would not have any doubts, about whether fuses could effect sonic change(s).

If you refer to my same homepage, you'll find that I'm primarily reviewing the Simaudio Neo 260D. But I'm also covering the Synergistic Research Quantum Red, and will, in the near future, pay attention to the Audio Magic Premier Beeswax Super. A few years ago, I wrote a few posts about the Hi-Fi Tuning Supreme.

Yes, these fuses are directional. That is, they will sound better in one direction, versus the other. The Quantum Red takes 3-4 weeks to "burn-in." The Premier Beeswax Super takes even longer. And the thing is, the latter can take a while, before it opens up, and sounds the way it should.

Once you establish the correct orientation, the HFT Supreme sounds fine from the start, and only needs a few days to settle.

Because my audio friends change gear frequently enough, they'll often end up with leftover fuses. 32mm, 20mm; fast blow, slow-blow...eventually I receive ones in ratings appropriate for my own gear. For me, the hard part is having to remove the after-market fuses, and revert to the stock OEM jobbies which came in my gear.
