Just find the part number and get someone to replace the device, i.e., unsolder the old device and replace the new device. Is it really worth the effort, though?

[Edit: Also, when you put a optical cable on it, see if the other end lights up -- don't LOOK at it, though, as I think that's not good for your eyes, but shine it on a surface. If you don't see the usual moderately strong red light, then the laser has gone bad and the device needs to be replaced.]
