That's an interesting question I simply don't know an answer to.

Perhaps a low-level tone can mask a subtle level of inner detail, spatial air, ambient information, soundstage depth, micro listening cues in general.

Maybe the tone itself can produce low-level harmonic overtones that clash with actual harmonic information.

Just pondering on my part.
