The only reason I am so well versed concerning noise on the line is because a few years ago for $30 I purchased an Entech Wideband Powerline Analyzer. Thought it would be a nice toy to "play" with. I could not have been more wrong! You can measure, and hear EXACTLY what is coming into your home, what stuff in your home generates, and lastly what each piece of your system is doing. The Entech is an amazing learning tool/system improver...
