FWIW, I've been using earplugs (foam, EarSoft brand) for over 15 years EVERY night and have suffered no ill effects whatsoever. And they sure work wonders if you have a partner who snores or if you live in a home near a highway or such.
The only cautions I would give are:
1) Make sure your ears are clean and dry before inserting the earplugs.
2) Be sure to remove them slowly, especially if they seal rather tightly. A ruptured eardrum will surely mess with your enjoyment of your system....
