Nice... I like the tweak and your clear description. Despite being a prodigious rope caulk user it never occurred to me to use it to smooth out steps near speakers. I've always used adhesive backed foams which do do a decent job, especially for killing corner radiation but what you're doing probably is a much better solution near the driver. I just took one look at your picture and immediately said under my breath: "damn that's a good idea".
