The cross-over delivers the musical information to activate the voice-coil of the tweeter, the mid-range and woofer at precisely the right time. Unfortunately the vibration from each activated speaker-box passes through the cabinet to disrupt the continuing accuracy of this timing in the other two voice-coils so preventing much of the satisfying slam in the bass sound, definition and PRAT in mid-range notes and sparkling detail in the treble range. Fortunately there's an inexpensive fix for those with this cone speaker defect.
Take black 1/16” Neoprene 60 Duro Gasket Rubber (that my local hardware store sells for $5.99 per foot and eBay sells for much less) and cut rings to insert between the mounting spots on the front of the speaker cabinet and each tweeter, mid-range and woofer. Then screw the speaker boxes back into position (ideally with brass screws to avoid the EMI with ferrous screws.) Now take some white rope caulk and fill in the slight raised gap between the speaker boxes and the cabinet caused by the insertion of the rubber ring. That will prevent sound-degrading disruption of the air-flow that would otherwise occur.
The concept of this tweak comes from Mr. A.J. van den Hul's “Hear out your hi-fi system” (1-18 Dull sounding speaker pulse response). And the effect of implementation is to experience remarkably enhanced dynamics and detail to such an extent that I got up and looked around for the real individual speaking to me from a ripped CD this morning! There's no way to judge the activity of the tweeters other than hearing ear-popping detail but the membrane rings on the mid-range and woofers are at least twice to three times as active. The volume setting needed on this system has halved. The cost is perhaps $35 for 6 1/16” Neoprene 60 Duro Gasket rubber rings and rope caulk but the cost/benefit for a pair of cone speakers is unmatched. (Much higher, for example, than enclosing the speaker magnets with MagnetShield to prevent the Fringing Effect that otherwise allows 20%-25% of the magnetic field to be lost from voice-coil activation.)
