Al calculated the values of caps and resistors he used very carefully with safety in mind. That much I can vouch for. The choices were not accidental, though he did experiment within those value ranges with different manufacturers' products. And he always used the proper X and Y rated caps.
The only deviation from the safety line was with resistors, which he tested carefully for safety on his own; I preferred to play it safer with flameproof resistors.
He settled on the WIMA caps before he passed away, but he didn't ever say they were the be all and end all.
