>>> “Old concept, popularized by Linn. Apparently passive cones absorb energy from driven ones and always takes away from energy which should go to your ears. SIngle speaker showrooms beecame the rage although sales staff.hated it.” <<<
Some 30 years ago, Ivor Teifenbrum (of Linn) successfully demonstrated the adverse effect of the presence of passive speakers when present in listening rooms where music was being played and audio equipment was being demonstrated. This was the start of Ivor’s campaign for single speaker dem rooms. Ivor’s observation was correct. Yes, his OBSERVATION was correct – that the sound was worse - but, from our own experiments and investigations, his explanation that the passive cones of the passive speakers were being activated by the air pressure waves created by the playing speakers and adding unwanted acoustics was not correct. Our investigations showed that it was the passive MAGNETS which were causing the adverse effect on the sound not the passive cones !!
We found that after cutting out the cones of the passive speakers and removing them from the room, leaving only the passive magnets – the adverse effect on the sound was STILL there, showing the passive cones could not have been the problem !!
