The designers strategy was to dull the highs in order to smooth out the sound. I found that better caps in the power supply allowed me to use metal films and achieve a much more cleaner, resolving sound. I would NEVER use carbon film for any audio work unless there was a specific reason other than 'dulling' the sound.
