Full Definition of DAMPEN
transitive verb

: to check or diminish the activity or vigor of : deaden "the heat dampened our spirits"

: to make damp "the shower barely dampened the ground"

If you're talking about limiting vibrations "dampen" is just as proper a word as "damp" and if you're talking about water "damp" is just as proper a word as dampen.

I don't understand why some people have problems with this.

Dampening vs. damping, damp vs. dampen, they mean the same thing....period!
