NOT so far that you, say, puncture your eardrum, but up against the ear canel opening. Then tap your cable with a pencil or such and see what you hear.
Tap the connector (the one not in your ear) in the direction of the wire. The longitudinal tap. Tap it in various places along the length, the lateral tap. The former helps judge how well the cable propagates speaker cabinet vibrations, the later how well it transfers lateral energy from floor vibrations.
The main point of susceptibility is probably the power amp in both cases although mechanical modulations of the cable parameters do also occur.
You can do the same bit with interconnect cables also and in that case triboelectric effects often raise their ugly heads. If you hook one end to a scope or amplifier and tap the other, open end with a piece of wood you can often see or hear the cable resonance. It's kinda cool, sorta like having big ben right in your room...
