Have you ever tried listening to speaker wires laterally? If I hook up a battery powered Amp. between the ends and listen away from the speakers with headphones it seems to me that I should be able to hear the signal "drop" across the cable. Probably could see it's spectrum running an FFT on my laptop also but I think listening would be more telling.
I know that paragraph may seem off-topic but my first thought on seeing your scheme was wanting to know what was going on and I was trying to think of a way.
Just sweeping it might show something also, especially looking at the phase. Way back when I switched to Kimber they were flat to 20Kc feeding my speakers while the Audioquest one's (which didn't sound as good) were over a dB down if I recall correctly.
