for the fact that they are relatively expensive. I use a thermal strpper with adjustable heat control. I can strip the finest wires even with teflon insulation. But for the only occasional user the price may not justify the need.In the past I used to use a Xacto knife with new blade and the barest necessary pressure to nick the insulation all around and then pull. For the Cardas phono cable (33 gauge) is used to dip the ends in flux and then simply push the end into a melted blob of solder on the soldering iron. The insulation would pull back enough to expose a workable ength of copper. Come to think of it, I would have to grab the melted insulation and pull towards the end to cover more of the wire, but then the heat sensors in my fingers are long dead.
