Hi,
I had a question like this once, and Peter "Audiosector" Daniels directed me to Nat Semi's LM2940/LM2990 pair, which I found are a major step up from generic 78XX/79XX.
I am sure they can be surpassed, but I still find sockets for them in AMR and iFi products, so I suggest that you could do worse than taking Peters advise.
