Taper v Stepped
1dB per step isn't great. My Placette does 0.25dB in the sensitive range.
If you go for 1 dB step you may find yourself adjusting volume more often than you want to.
Taper - this depends on the accurracy of match between channels.
Impedance 10k if you have an amp with lower input impedance; fine if amp has 50-100K impedance.
It is much better to go for a Passive with constant or near constant impeadnce as the 10k Placettes, but then the price goes up and if you assemble the Bent top price units, you may as well buy a Placette (which sound excellent)
