I agree, I have two DACs that have volume controls and I would never replace my non remote conrad-johnson pre with a passive or DAC with volume. After getting the c-j I can confidently say the preamp is the heart of a great system.....I have had several very good pre's over the years including passive line stage and none have opened up the sound like the c-j. It was the most noticeable upgrade I've ever made.
