RE: Anyone have a source for or experience with

Carborundum, AKA SiC, or Silicon Carbide, is a naturally occurring crystal that is typically Green in its purest form, but can be black.
It is not especially common as a naturally occurring material on earth - but has been manufactured for many years (coming up on 100) as an abrasive and refractory product.
It can be sintered after forming from grains.
The typical manufacturing process produces large chunks which are then crushed to desired size and screened for uniformity.
It is very durable, but brittle.
If you want to buy in bulk, talk to Saint Gobain, they purchased Norton Abrasives - the largest producer world wide about 30 years ago....
