Actually

It takes a long time of not seeing before the brain changes and improves the other senses. There was a PBS show from 5-10 years ago narrated by Alan Alda that blindfolded people with site. They would monitor the vision center of the brain and watched the activity go away after a couple of days in that area of the brain. Just before thirty days of being blindfolded they saw the activity pick up again as the brain "decided" to store other data in that previously set aside but now mostly dormant area. This brain behavior is the same reason that when one gets a hearing loss aids must be used to continue to "properly" stimulate the hearing area of the brain or the same thing happens; the brain uses it for other things and then hearing really starts to deteriorate and does not come back even with aids due to brain reassignment if you will. It starts with not understanding speech subtilties. Just yesterday I talked about hearing with my older cousin who has been wearing aids over 5 years but not all the time like he needs to. He's been a loud talker for some time so probably did not get aids when he first needed them. I covered my mouth so he could not read lips and said "this" quite loudly from three feet away. I said what word did I say, after he had said oh no problem hearing you, he said "fist". Close only counts in horseshoes and
hand grenades.
