I got fed up with buying different lengths of high quality usb cables with their inflated prices and so I bought 7 metres of Wireworld violet usb cable, and Connex connectors from Partsconnexion/eBay to make my own.
I then discovered that there are 2 versions of the WW cable. The first one has the wrong colour coded wires with both D+ and D- and + and - separately shielded in 2 bundles. The second and latest has D- and D- shielded with drain wire and + and 1 on either side of the shield. Colour code is correct. They sound different.
V1 emulates Starlight Silver but less resolving. It is more difficult to connect and Black for Red is confusing. V2 is laid out in moulded conduit fashion and is easier to connect.
So for about £90 outlay, I have a host of different lengths of cable that I can compare. So far, I have found that the shorter the better (<50 cm). This is the opposite of what some has said ie longer is better.
Apart from audio, I can throw away all the cheap unbending curled stuff I get free and just use the WW which, being flat bends and lays much better.
I also now have the experience and skill to do the same for the more exotic WW and other cables. With the WW layout, the A end is easier than the B end to fix.
Hope this helps someone
