As far as I can tell, the QR8's are just quartz in a black enclosure. Quartz is pizoelectric, so it converts electomagnetic fields into vibrations and heat. Its effect is to clean up electromagnetic hash and can make a big difference in soundstage and fine detail. They can be effective in many locations, but you can overdo it. I put one on top of a speaker and the sound improved, but when I dumped all eight on the speaker, there was really nasty distortion. Perhaps this was because of the interaction of the adjacent crystals--I don't know.
There are other piezoelectric crystals--tourmaline and topaz work well. Avoid black tourmaline, but the translucent stones work well. If you do an internet search for topaz, you can find stones for very little money.
I've put stones in my circuit breaker box, inside of my electronics, and adjacent to equipment. The quartz is a little fussy about where it's put. The topaz seems to work just about anywhere. If you chase down Unclestu52's posts on crystals, he has a lot to say about how they work and why they work. I've posted on this before too.
In the picture above, the green and pink crystals are watermelon tourmaline, the clear / amber crystals are topaz and the black stones are tourmaline.
