Actually Tarragon, you may be right. I just revisited two online articles detailing the assembly of a shunt-type attenuator, and both refer to the use of linear pots. If anyone else wants to chime in here to confirm that this was my mistake, I'd welcome the input ; )

My plan now is to go ahead and wire my first project (using audio taper pots) without the shunt mod. I'll then try the shunt attenuator project again, only with linear pots.
