My memory is weak on this, but do those shunt schemes assume that the pot is linear taper or log (audio) taper?
Perhaps that is the problem. BTW it is not just the input Z of the amp you (or others) need to worry about, it is also the output Z of the source. If there is not enough mismatch (low to high) then you may be trying to draw current from the source. Most sources are not designed to do this and they will distort.
