Thanks Chris and Steve! I got out my ol soldering iron last night to do some switching around, but something's not right. Now the volume appears to be full on for almost the entire sweep of the pot, but then tapers off as the pot is wide open.

Just to reiterate, here's what I have now, looking at the pots from the front (knob side) with the lugs up: I'm going from red RCA output center pin to left lug of right volume pot; going from the black RCA output center pin to left lug of left volume pot; connecting center and right lugs of both pots to ground tabs of all four RCA jacks (input and output pairs); connecting center pins of red output and input RCA jacks with a 1k resistor; and connecting center pins of black output and input RCA jacks with the remaining 1k resistor.

Steve, I was glad you chimed in because I've read your AA comments on the "myth" about shunt type volume controls. Here's what I liked about the shunt attenuator I tried in my system...it had more dynamics, great SPLs and sounded almost like it had gain when compared with two other more conventional passive preamps I was sampling. I assumed again that this was due to the ratio of the impedance of the pot to the resistors (10:1 in this particular case), so that's why I set out to build my own using this same configuration.

That said, I would also love to try a simple passive attenuator without the shunt mod. So, for this unschooled DIYer, can you just spell out how I'd wire that using the two 10k alpha pots from Rat Shack, one pair of RCA inputs and one pair of RCA outputs? I know you kinda did that already in your first post, but I'm not fully understanding (unschooled in electronic DIY, as I said ; - )

Thanks, guys!

A.
