I'm thinking that I'm going to leave well enough alone, since it's working, and there was an improvement. I don't have the schematic, and doubt it's available on such an obscure product.
It's not worth tracing out the circuit, and re-designing it. You can't polish a turd, as it were. Not that this JEC is a bad entry level phono preamp. Several guys over at the Vinyl Asylum thought it bettered a few more well known name-brand phono stages, which is why I bought it for a spare.
The main reason I was concerned about the voltage to the 2604 is when I searched the many postings here at the Tweaker's Asylum, most suggested the 2604 really needed higher voltage to perform well.
I did not use Schottky diodes in the psu, I used something I had on hand. Fast/soft recovery glass passivateds from Mouser. I had planned on getting the Schottky's on my next Digi-Key order, so thanks for the reminder.
