After reading your post I went back and took some measurements. When grounding my meter at the grounding post of the phono stage (where the turntable ground lead would normally go) I measure +/- 4.7 vdc at pins 4 & 8.

If I ground the meter at the ground in the outboard power supply I get 9.35 volts at pin 8, and 1.3 mV at the negative pin 4. So it sounds like your assessment of "the classic input offset method" may be correct.

So, if the answer is to simply build a negative power supply, part of my original question still stands. Can I then lift the power pins of the 2604, bend them outwards, and attach the +/- to the appropriate pins via wire?
