First hand experience, having three trees in my yard take direct hits, you get used to the sound/smell in proximity.
I've got an Intermatic lightning arrestor on my service panel and added four additional ground rods (contact your Elect. Inspector). Prior to the above, it was a few hundred bucks each time, as most of the expensive stuff was already unplugged.
After the install, the last and final direct tree strike, (non left) I lost nothing. My neighbor OTOH, lost all his appliances and toys including the computer in his car.
A direct hit on your house will be catastrophic, regardless of what you use for protection.
