Tweakers' Asylum

This raises an interesting question.

A large inductor can store significant energy, and generate a very large voltage pulse with some kick to it if current through it is interrupted suddenly.

When there is a power outage, the AC does not always come back on cleanly. The chokes connected across the AC line might cause equipment damage by generating their own spikes.

Should there be some sort of transient voltage suppression device installed across the choke? The typical MOVs used in cheap surge suppression strips are reported to be noisy. Does anyone have a recommendation for a more robust and quiet device?
