Back in the late 80's, I owned a DBX 1BX which IIRC is a bigger brother to the 117 and while at first it was fun to have in the system and did provide some dynamic range expansion on standard production releases and FM, the side effects of the processing grew to be to hard to ignore and thus I sold the unit.

However, I did dub some cassettes/RTR tapes with the unit in place of Dolby and the results were quite good but the drawback was that those tapes had to be played back utilizing the DBX unit thus rendering them to limited use.

Onto the mods. IIRC, the PCB on my 1BX just slid into slots on the side walls and was not very secure in that it would rattle in the slots. Not sure if yours is constructed the same way but I put some shims between the PCB/slots to secure the PCB. Also the input/output RCA jacks were pretty low quality. I would consider changing these out and also the PS caps to your favorite flavor of cap.

Right off the bat though, I would remove the molded AC plug and install an Oyaide AC plug in it's place leaving the stock AC cord. I have done this to several older pieces that utilize a captured AC cord/molded plug and the results were NOT subtle.

I am aware that my reply may not be exactly what you were looking for but I am just relaying that sometimes with older electronics, it's best to leave the original circuit/sub components intact, with the exception of electrolytic caps of course, and just tweak the input/output side of it.

Cheers,
