Basically with any component you want to keep the leads as short as possible. As long as there isn't anything that is generating heat around the mounting spot you should be able to just place it on top of other components (resistors, other caps, etc.) but I would absolutely suggest finding a clear spot if at all possible. You definitely don't want to cause a short of any type.

You can use some hot glue to fasten it, or perhaps drill some small holes through the board if you are careful to miss any traces, then use a tie wrap to fasten it down (I would try the hot glue first).
