Yes, subwoofers can be fed from the amp speaker output terminals, but it is only a compromise for stereo amps or older surround receivers which do not get low level subwoofer output jacks. The proper way is to use line level O/P from the amp.

FYI, I've just gone thru the pain of installing an on/off switchable additional line output from my phonostage/linestage to power my 10" active subwoofer.

Before doing so, I wanted to take it easy by hooking it up to the speaker O/P terminals of my tube power amp. No good, bud. It sounds only so so considering what is feeding into the subwoofer: music mixed distortion, noise & hum from the amp, getting worse on cranking up!

Want decent undistorted music? Go line level. Install one if don't get one.
