I've too have seen the "blob" fuses and have wondered if it is some form of stabilization for inrush currents or maybe fine tuning the amperage rating.I have also seen fuses that employ the metal strip element with a portion of the element trimmed down on both sides in the center. Again, fine tuning maybe?
