IEC tests: Furutech FI 11 / 25 vs Acme Silver

voicing is all about finding the right parts to give you the tone you want. IECs are part of that process. here's my thoughts for the gold-plated furutechs vs a silver plated Acme.

build quality gets the nod to furutech (as it should, they're 2x more $, or 6x for the FI25). the Acme & FI11 both have fairly generous solder tabs, the FI25 has screw terminals for those afraid of soldering.

both furutech have a better grip on the ac cord than the acme.

now, the big question: tone. first off, both are light years improved from that tin / nickel plated SH*T that mfg's put as OEM inside your gear (hint: if you want better sound, replace the stock w/ any aftermkt IEC). that said, the Acme's silver plating sounds like silver normally does....a bit tipped in the upper mids, imparting a sense of increased detail / information, with a bit of dryness. the furutechs provide a bit less info, but provide coloration in the lower mids, which makes them subjectively warmer & more musical.

however, component matching should determine what gets used: if i had a SS bruiser that sounds like SS, there's no question the furutech is the way to go. if i were using tube gear, the acme will be the better choice, as the furutechs would push the tone over to the 'too mellow' camp.

not sure on power cords (as ACME doesn't make a male IEC or AC plug), but i'd expect the gold plated furutechs to sound the same there....a good thing w/ some of the tin / nickel plated wires, but probably too warm w/ a pure copper cable.
