Many folks have to deal with odd shaped rooms, yours seems similar to some that have been posted here before.I would say that adding some ASC bass traps in each corner (as possible), as well as in the corners of the extended side portion, should help with the muddy aspect.
Some Argent Room Lens temporarily placed at the widened portion for listening should also help restore some of the balance to the sound/imaging.
However, once you see the prices on these, you may want to reconsider the DIY optins, many are not that hard, and others have less involved versions.

http://www.AudioAsylum.com/audio/tweaks/messages/1725.htmlThe Super Quick & Dirty Bass traps are pretty easy, even if you build a simple chicken wire frame to hold the rolls of fiberglass, and the DIY room lens ala 'noodles' or with hardware store fixture created base is also pretty easy.
How NICE any of them end up looking depends on how much effor you put into them, if they are in a dedicated listening room, and do not have to be "furniture grade", then you can still make them look pretty decent, and they WILL work well.
