Hi all,
recently i have been doing some mods with a friend to an Audio research LS2B pre amplifier.
Having looked at the way that ARC build there pre amps in metal cases we decided to have a go at changing the one for the LS2B.
Why change the case i hear you ask,
The metal case that most pre amp manufacturers use acts as a great receiver of magnetism and electrical signal pick up.The mod that has been done here was done at a slow pace because testing was done at every junction.
The ARC LS2B pcb was taken out and placed in a chassis which was made from old Piano wood.Talk about a transformation - I have never heard a tweak as good as this one.
Since the ARc SP3 and SP6 i have not ben too impressed with the rest of the ARc range, Every ARC unit i have heard since seems to have a cold and exact sound to just about everything and i swear i could hear the same sonic signature throughout the range.Placing the parts within a new chassie has totally and utterly transformed this pre amp to such an extent that i simply cannot believe the difference, It really made me and a buddy literally speechless.
Gone is the cold and stark portrail and what has emerged is a transparency and emotion that is beyond a shadow of a doubt utterly superb. The PCB was placed back inside the ARc LS2B casework and then re auditioned, The sound returned to the way it was before I.E. Lifeless.
This has proven that the metal casework that ARc use and others is a bad design from a sound perspective, Would you make a piano from metal - NO.
Would you make a speaker from metal - No, Then why a pre amp?I strongly recommend this mod to anybody, It will TRANSFORM your ARC unit to new heights.
Recent mods have been added including hard wiring the input straight to the volume pot and also taking out unnecessary source selectors.I have added some picks in my gallery under CROFT
this has been a transformation for this pre amp, The mind boggles........
