Cable distortion

Far as I'm aware I'm still banned on Cable Asylum so can't respond to this post there. Sorry.

From http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/cables/messages/94235.html

Flash: Just this week, my associate (tech) brought in his 'best' audio connecting cable. He got it from the discount table at The Good Guys (electronic outlet) for about $35. Made by Monster, looks really nice. He asked me to test it for 'distortion'.
In a word, it sucks! Made my day, and I bought the cable from him, in order to test it further. Worse than RS or any cable SE sent me. Stereo cable and both channels measure a high degree of higher order distortion. Go figure!

What John fails to mention is that the distortion he's measuring ISN'T being produced by the cables he's measuring.

This was addressed some months ago when I sent an identical set of cables to both John and Bruno Putzeys, who duplicated John's measurements using an Audio Precision System Two Cascade. The System Two Cascade was able to measure better than 20dB below where John's measurements bottom out (to -145dB below the fundamental) and there was no sign whatsoever of the high order harmonic components John claims to be measuring.

It's perhaps worth noting that John's measurement system centers around a 28 year old ST-1700B distortion analyzer, which even 28 years ago was a second-rate, less expensive alternative to ST's top of the line analyzer of the time.
