HF Absorbptive Panel Query

Hi All,

Thanks for all the help in the past few days with regards to bass traps. I have gotten those figured out and will be building them in the next couple of days.

My focus now is on the absorption panels which I need since my room is very lively with a fair amount of echo. I have seen many designs (from very basic to very complex). What I need is something cheap, simple and portable (ie. not built directly on the walls). Whilst looking up such commercially available products on the net, almost all I saw were simply rigid fiberglass boards covered with burlap. I know this may not be as 100% effective as the complex designs but for now I think they should suffice, but I have a few queries with regards to the materials.
Good Day,

Unfortunately products such as yours are not available here in South Africa. I am thus trying to build my own absorptive wall panels, to reduce echoes and absorb mid/high range frequencies. I see on the page for your acoustic panels they are described as rigid fiberglass boards covered with cloth/burlap. I have found sources for such materials but just need to ask, if possible, some direction on which exact boards to use.

I can get both rockwool and fiberglass boards. The fiberglass boards can be seen here: http://www.owenscorning.co.za/glasswool/soundlite.htm and the rockwool can be seen here: http://www.owenscorning.co.za/rockwool/rigidboards.htm . These come in various thicknesses and densities and thus have different NRC's and other acoustical properties. The Owen's Corning here does not have the same codes as in the US so we don't have something like a OC 703 or 705 as you do in the US. Thus if possible please can you guys point me in the right direction with regards to my 3 concerns:

1. Whether to use fiberglass or rockwool panels?
2. Which thickness of board to use?
3. Which density to use?

I believe I can simply wrap these boards in burlap and use to mount on the walls or on stands to be portable, for MF/HF absorption, correct? Any advice is really appreciated as products and/or acoustic expertise is very difficult to come by here. Also, would it make a difference If I attach the boards to a MDF/plywood backing and then cover everything with burlap, to give some more rigidity?

With thanks and regards,
X
South Africa
