Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

my first foray into the word of tubes..and its been a nightmare so far..

i picked up a used rogers e40a 40 push pull int amp. couple of days later i find the image skewing to the right. im not technically inclined but i do have a voltmeter for the diy i/cs i make for myself and following instructions on the sheffield test cd, i note that the output of the right channel was a lot more than the left. a new transformer was called for. since i couldnt get the replacement transformer where i am, i have it shipped from the UK. not cheap - cost of replacement close to 40% of purchase price of the amp. anyway - its fixed and i lug it home - hook it up - sounds good but upon closer listening, things werent centered - (i am very sensitive to this) - out comes my voltmeter - right outputting more than left - but not so bad this time - up to 20% more than left - earlier with the bad transformer - the right was outputting up to 70% more than left. i use the balance control - get things balanced but the minute i reduce or increase the volume, the balance goes astray - so i find out that its a 'mistracking potentiometer' (??) is this right? i am at the end of my rope - im thinking of selling the thing and going back to ss or just living with my headphone system for a while. but before i do this, i would like to be very sure that there isnt anything than can be done to save the day. thanks for reading this and if you can help out, thanks in advance for taking the time to do so.
sincerely
mikey
