6550s vs KT90s vs KT 88's in AR D115mk2

130.219.55.122

As noted above, I have an Audio research D115mk2 amplifier which I like very much: it is apparently one of the last of the AR products to still sound like a tube amp (IMHOP the newer products have wonderful clarity but are a little cold and SS-sounding.)

One fault I would find with the amp, however, is the lack of heft in the bottom: it is mated presently with Vancy IICE's and regularly washes out or clips on more demanding deep bass material ( eg, the opening of cut of the Chris Botti album ( Midnight Without You), "THE STEPS OF POSITANO" being a good example.

I've had KT90s recommended to me as a replacement tube for the 6550s in the D115, with the proposition that the bass would stronger and more focused. ( Four matched pair, ouch!). I've also had KT88's recommended. In checking with Audio Research, they recommend staying with the SVetlana 6550s, which they think are more linear and open.

Comments, opinons, suggestions?
