Hello,
when I bought my SA-7.1 second hand it came retubbed with GD tubes (2*12AX7 and 2*6DJ8) they are both matched pairs but however I didn't like the sound at all: structurally speaking those 12AX7 doesn't seem like 12AX7 at all (referring to conventional plate structure such as typical RCA 12AX7) and the sound? forget it). those GD 6DJ8 are even worse, not only it's microphonic (I can "ping" the tube with a flick on my finger :-< ) but the sound is kinda "fake"...giving you a somewhat "artificial" feel that doens't sound right. I was told by my favourite dealer that story has it told that PE group of G.B. bought the leftovers of Mullard and MO valve machinerys and stored it in a warehouse. Later they shipped them to China and with the old specs and some mixed design they come out some tubes that "sounded" like MO valve stuff (are U kidding me??). Unfortunately, to my knowledge they (my experienxes have limited me to GD12AX7 and GD 6DJ8 so far) are nothing but some garbage or "clone" from "ex" China Military tube factory (notably the slightly smaller diameter pins and the way they melt the vacuuming tip is typical of the "Shanghai factory" that makes some "consumer grade" tubes back in the 70s).....Sorry folks, GD just isn't my cup of tea at all , especially considering the price they are selling them..regards,
Quest
