There is no metal around the tube pins - the metal band is around the glass only.The band of metal is not to keep the plastic from splitting - there is no plastic band underneath! Actuallt the reason the metal band was quickly dropped is that it is extremely prone to splitting and plastic much less so!
There is lots of confusion about metal base Sylvania 6SN7 numbering because they are incredibly often mislabelled. The A and the W are different tubes, but are often labelled as each other! But sonically - really no difference.
