Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Who is your tube guru?

I dont know if you got the answers you expected or answers that confirmed your expectations. But, from the answers in your post it is obvious that the 5814 is for all "practical purposes" a good sub for the 12au7. So, it makes me wonder why your tube guru would make such a statement.
If the company that makes your amp is covering their butt by not recommending that tube then simply wait until your warranty expires before trying it. And if the amp blows up by subbing 2 5814 that pushed the power transformer over the top and caused it to fail then i will have to say that it certainly was not a well designed amp. Any engineer, worth his salt will build in some leeway into the specs to allow for out of spec components, including tubes, and this will allow greater reliability and longevity. So, if your amp uses 12au7, the 5814 will not cause your amp any harm. cheers.
