My wife is in NY for family reasons. So I'm here with a lot of time on my hands. All this talk of EL34s got me tinkering.

We just moved so my entire listening setup has changed from my last house. So it was also time to retweak the listening setups.

I only have the one set of Shaguangs EL34 and Gold Lion KT66. So not much of a race!

However I did find out a few things about my setups in general. Like my VTA ST-70 DOES work better with a preamp. And my NAD C275BEE, opps did I slide in a solid state amp there - sorry, doesn't work well with a preamp. It works much better with just a passive attenuator.

As mentioned a number of times the GL KT66 do have that extra energy on top and bottom. Just a great tube in every respect. Not much more you can ask of a tube!

However the EL34 does have a mellower kinder presentation. A more laid back relaxed presentation. One that I really do like - at times.

I do like the EL34 - not as a full time setup but I am very happy to at least have that option to change things up with. In the future I think I'm going to add the EH 6CA7 to the list. I think that was the tube Jim recommended???

The Sherwood S-5000 is still the winner. I just love that little stereo. I think I may have to have the sockets redone in the future.

And I have a Marantz 250M being restored for the fall holidays. It and the VTA will pair up with the Conrad Johnson. Opps another SS amp. I feel a mob forming better run!
