FIY (Fix it Yourself)

I started noticing a drop in volume that slowly would rise back to normal . Soon after, another drop in volume (1 db?)...enough to notice. I considered posting here to ask where I should start for the culprit but figured I'd give it a shot myself. I decided to pull the two Sylvania 6BQ5s and replace them with a strong testing pair of something Euro.

Problem solved. The problem was a pair of tubes that after 5 years of heavy use, one had fallen to the reject test point. The getter flash had thinned. The other wasn't close behind test wise, but with a strong flash.

This is one reason I like tubed gear. I'm no electrical tech by any means...never will be. But the simplicity (sometimes) of tube equipment has given me many opportunities over the years, to evaluate and fix my own equipment. I've done some caps, some resistors, and socket replacements. I rarely ever have problems with (used!) tubes. But today....the time had come.

I look at solid state guts and say......duh.
