Apparently 8417 tubes were quite difficult to make as well. In fact some say the only good 8417 is a Sylvania, the GEs had some grid issues IIRC. The very high Gm of the 8417 (about 50% higher than a 6550) meant internal construction had to be very high precision due to the close spacing of the elements. Apparently that was quite difficult to do even back then.
