Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

8417 tubes and their history.

I was never that fond of the 8417 because my Dynaco MK6s were not so good but to be fair, they had the stock 7199 driver tubes so that was a lot of it.
I bought the amps new in kit form on sale for 269 each from a place called Dixie hifi. This was in 1980.They were good sized amps but they weren't big on detail so I ended up selling them after 4 years for 950 for the pair.

This kind of turned me off to 8417s and until a friend brought this Dynaco ST70 last year with the curcio copy driver board and it had four 6922s,two per channel.. The 8417s were hooked in triode and I can tell you that ST70 was one of the most dynamic and powerful ST70s I've ever heard..This amp was more full and dynamic than any ST70 I've heard running UL..The only thing it would be was the 8417s so from then on,that is a wonderful tube in the right setup.

Like Steve O said,it was one of the very last power tubes to come on the market and companies were starting to switch over to solid state so very few amps used them other than Bogen and other PA amps and Fisher and Dynaco and Quicksilver. Those are the ones that come to mind..I'm sure there are others. There were also some guitar amps and some were used in industrial applications.

This is no doubt the reason New Sensor,Shuggie,or SED, didn't bother reproducing the tube..There isn't enough equipment to justify a production run` I would guess.
