Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: another pic plus more info...

Good to see that it actually WAS refurbished and not just given a nice coat of paint. Kudos to the previous owner!

Still, with a 68uf first cap, I would suggest you take Eli's advice and install those UF4007 diodes if you go with a 5AR4. The new production versions probably can't handle that much (although I have no experience with them, I trust Eli, Mikey and Jim McShane's experience) and if you decide to spring for a Mullard or Amperex, it would be a shame to lose one of them in the event that they couldn't handle that much. Cheap insurance in either case. When tubes were cheap and readily available some manufacturers didn't think twice about pushing the limits quite a bit. I have a little Pilot console amp that actually had 80uf after its 5AR4 (a nice Mullard). When I rebuilt it I dropped it down to 47uf out of caution.

I would still be a little concerned about the voltages being high for all the reasons I mentioned earlier. And I forgot all about the difference in voltage drop, as Interstage Tranny mentioned. The 5AR4 specs indicate a voltage drop of only 17v while the 5U4GB drops 50v. So just that change alone will be a significant increase. When you add them all together . . . well, I'd want to know what they were and perhaps make some changes to resistor values to bring them down a bit in the interest of reliability and tube life. If you aren't up to doing it yourself you should find someone who can.
