I think the situation "parallels" that with what Sylvania did to fulfill a 6B4G contract, by internally triode wiring 6AV5Gs. Other than a slightly lower forward drop, a 5AR4 drops right into a socket intended to take a 5V4. Things easily could have been "close enough for government work".
The picture posted sure shows what looks like a JAN box.
This time around, the tube end user community got a bonus. :>)
