I think you summed it up nicely with the "smear" descriptor. A number of years ago I had Cary V12i monos that came from the factory with Sovtek EL-34's. The bass was actually pretty decent when run in ultralinear, but switch to triode (where my ears got happy) and the bass turned flabby. Some of the smear improved in triode, but was in full attendance in ultralinear. So what's a guy to do? Call Uncle Kevin and fork over the cash for NOS GEC KT-66's. He didn't have enough KT-77's on hand, and while he had enough KT-88's, 24 of them were a bit too rich for the wallet (the amps could be run with any of those). With the KT-66's those amps really sang, and if I weren't such an SET addict, I'd probably still have them.
